Westwood Announcements
Early Morning Band
5th Grade Early Band Practice to Begin October 20th

Early morning band will be starting on October 20th. All band students will have early band practice on Mondays and Thursdays from October 20th until the end of the school year. Please make the proper arrangements to drop your student off at Westwood Elementary beginning at 7:00 AM those days. Please do not drop your student off before 7:00 AM as there is no supervision and school doors will be locked. Students should be dropped off at the front entrance. Students will enter through the designated entrance and then proceed safely and quietly to the band room. Students should be in their seats, ready to play their instrument at 7:10. Students must have their instrument, three ring binders, books and all other appropriate band supplies for early band. Students in safety patrol will be able to attend early morning band. Those students will work with their classroom teachers to cover safety patrol shifts. If you have any questions please contact rachel.urban@ankenyschools.org.

Visitors/Volunteers
At Westwood Elementary, we welcome visitors to our classrooms.  We ask that visits are pre-arranged and be limited to 30 minutes in length in order to minimize interruptions to instructional time.  If you plan to visit, please let your child's teacher know in advance.

We encourage parents to wait a couple of weeks after the beginning of school in the fall before visiting so that our staff and students can settle into expectations, routines, etc.

Please bring your drivers license with you when visiting the building as we will be running a sex offender check on all visitors before they are let into the building.

Please note that a volunteer packet must be filled out yearly if you plan on volunteering at Westwood (including visiting class parties or going on field trips).  The background check portion is good for 5 years, however, the contact information needs to be filled out yearly.  If you have any questions please call the Westwood office or email Nicole.aplin@ankenyschools.org.

Daylight Savings Time Ends This Weekend
Don't forget: Daylight savings time ends and we return to standard time this weekend at 2:00 AM Sunday, November 2.  Remember to set your clocks back ("fall back") one hour Saturday night.
November 6 flu clinic location changed to Southview Middle School -
The Polk County Health Department flu clinic originally scheduled to be held at Ankeny High School on November 6 has been changed to Southview Middle School at 1020 SW Cherry Street.  Please note this change of location.  Ankeny Community School District is again partnering with the Polk County Health Department to provide seasonal flu vaccination clinics, and vaccinations will be available to all staff and students, and to the public.  Learn more about the flu clinics here.
Winter clothing donations available November 2 and 3:
If you are in need of winter outer wear for your Ankeny student(s), the F.E.W.D. (Faith and Education Winter Donations) program, supported by Project Fresh Start through the Ankeny Community Education Department, will distribute donated winter clothing on:
  • Sunday, November 2, 1:00-6:00 PM
  • Monday, November 3, 4:00-8:00 PM
  • Clothing pick-up center will be open at 502 North Ankeny Blvd. (in the strip mall with Papa Murphy’s Pizza).
No need analysis form is required to receive needed winter wear.  Recipients will only be asked for student age and proof of Ankeny residence (such as driver’s license or a bill with an Ankeny address).  View more information on the donation drive.
Kids learn about "super foods" during Community Ed class:
Ankeny Community Education and Ankeny Prairie Trail Hy-Vee dietitians partnered to bring a new experience to youth in second through fifth grades.  The "Super Food Snack Attack" course on October 18 was a fun, hands-on class focusing on "super foods."  Read more about this class for elementary students.
