Board approves 2015-2016 school calendar as recommended by Calendar Committee -
At their April 20 meeting, the Ankeny Board of Education voted to approve the 2015-2016 school calendar, as recommended by the School Calendar Committee. Prior to the meeting, the Board had reviewed several options for the calendar, including the final recommendation submitted by the committee. New Iowa legislation set the earliest start date for Iowa schools during the week following the state fair. Read more and view the approved calendar here.
Outbound E-mail Issues
The district is currently experiencing issues with some outbound e-mails reaching intended recipients outside the school district.  If you send an e-mail to someone in the district, it is possible they may not be able to respond to you via e-mail.  If you need an immediate response, please be sure to include other contact information in your messages, or instead call via telephone.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

AUTHOR VISIT
Hello, the library is very excited to host Caldecott Award winning author Mac Barnett at Westwood on Friday, May 1st. Students have the opportunity to purchase his books and have them autographed by him during his visit.  Your student will receive their books soon after Mac’s visit.  If your student already owns one of his books, they are welcome to bring that to the library in April and we will have that signed for them as well.  Order forms went home with students last week and I am attaching one to this email as well.  All book orders are due back to the library on Monday, March 9th.   You can read more information about each of his books by going to http://www.macbarnett.com/.
Visitors/Volunteers
At Westwood Elementary, we welcome visitors to our classrooms.  We ask that visits are pre-arranged and be limited to 30 minutes in length in order to minimize interruptions to instructional time.  If you plan to visit, please let your child's teacher know in advance.

We encourage parents to wait a couple of weeks after the beginning of school in the fall before visiting so that our staff and students can settle into expectations, routines, etc.

Please bring your drivers license with you when visiting the building as we will be running a sex offender check on all visitors before they are let into the building.

Please note that a volunteer packet must be filled out yearly if you plan on volunteering at Westwood (including visiting class parties or going on field trips).  The background check portion is good for 5 years, however, the contact information needs to be filled out yearly.  If you have any questions please call the Westwood office or email Nicole.aplin@ankenyschools.org.

Reminder: Classes to be in session April 24; snow make-up day
Due to classes being cancelled for inclement weather on January 7, Ankeny Schools will use the April 24 “Built in Snow Day” shown on the district calendar to make up the missed day.  Instead of being a day off from school, regular classes will be in session and students will attend school on Friday, April 24.
Before And After-School Summer Adventures Camp Registration Now Open!
A summer full of sizzling fun is planned for students who have completed grades K-5 at the Before and After-School Program’s Summer Adventures Camp.  There is something for everyone in this summer camp that’s jam-packed with hands-on enrichment fun!  Select the camps you want, don’t pay for those you don't.  Campers may register for only one or two weeks, or the entire summer.  For more information and to register, visit the Before and After-School Program website.
