Westwood Announcements
Cold Weather Guidelines
The cold weather is here which increases the number of students that are car riders.  It has been brought to my attention that several drivers are not following our arrival and dismissal procedures.  I would like to take a minute to offer a friendly reminder of the expectations so we ensure the safety of all children.

1. Students should not be dropped off on NW 9th Street and expected to cross the street or walk through cars.  All students must exit their cars while in line in the parking lot.  If you chose to park in the lot and walk your student to the door, please do not cut between cars.  Walk to the front of the building and wait for the adults to stop the car line and direct you through.

2. When arriving to school on NW 9th, arrive from the east.  Do not make a left turn into the parking lot coming from the west.

3. No left turns allowed into the bus lane coming from the north on Irvinedale.  If you use the bus lane off Irvinedale to drop off your student after 7:40,  please arrive from the south.

4. Students that need to cross NW 9th should only do so at the crosswalk.

5. No animals are allowed on school grounds during arrival and dismissal.

I appreciate your efforts to help arrival and dismissal operate safely and efficiently.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Dr. Dittmar at (515)965-9690.

Cold Weather Clothing
With the weather getting colder, please remember to send appropriate outdoor clothing with your child for recess.  Err on the side of caution when deciding whether or not to send hats, mittens and winter coats with your child.  When the temperature and/or wind chill is at zero degrees or below, students will not go outside for recess and safety patrol will not be on outside duty.  Otherwise, recess will be held as scheduled.  Please remember to label all outdoor clothing with your child's name.
Giving Tree
The Westwood Giving Tree Project and Annual Food Drive will begin Monday, December 1st and end Friday, December 12th. Please send any non-perishable food items during those two weeks. Our student ambassadors will be taking the lead in organizing this event. Last school year we collected over 2,500 non-perishable food items that were donated to Red Rock Community Action Program, Inc., Ankeny’s local food bank. Please join our collaborative effort in helping local Ankeny families this holiday season. Thank you for making a difference!

Visitors/Volunteers
At Westwood Elementary, we welcome visitors to our classrooms.  We ask that visits are pre-arranged and be limited to 30 minutes in length in order to minimize interruptions to instructional time.  If you plan to visit, please let your child's teacher know in advance.

We encourage parents to wait a couple of weeks after the beginning of school in the fall before visiting so that our staff and students can settle into expectations, routines, etc.

Please bring your drivers license with you when visiting the building as we will be running a sex offender check on all visitors before they are let into the building.

Please note that a volunteer packet must be filled out yearly if you plan on volunteering at Westwood (including visiting class parties or going on field trips).  The background check portion is good for 5 years, however, the contact information needs to be filled out yearly.  If you have any questions please call the Westwood office or email Nicole.aplin@ankenyschools.org.

Pay-to-Ride busing 2nd semester registration is now open:
Ankeny Schools are pleased to again offer an optional pay-to-ride student transportation program for elementary and middle school students who live within two miles of their assigned school and high school students who live within three miles of their assigned school.  Sign-up for second semester is now underway, and closes on December 15.  Learn more about the program here.
